Paintings, mixed media, and collage

Property Lines (2024)

Property Lines is a mixed media piece primarily composed of acrylic paint. The central idea of the piece is focused around the three red figures in the middle left of the painting. The figures are without shadows or faces, so the viewer is unable to tell whether the figures are moving away or towards the other reactive character in the bottom right corner of the painting, which is a cut out photograph of Marchese layered on top of two levels of cardboard. The piece also features glued on red pine branches, birch bark, and small dried leaves. The artist intended these pieces to bring depth and a tactile involvement between the viewer and the piece.

Electric July (2025)

Electric July is a painting made with acrylic paint and acrylic marker, the words and symbols derived from an original poem "July". The poem features memories of eating fruit in the summer as a young teenager, compiled with references to my (at the time) girlfriend. Some elements of the painting were not included in the original poem, but seemed appropriate by intuition to add to the painting.

Reverence (2024)

Reverence is a mixed media cut paper and gouache painting collage depicting the family cabin located in Northern Michigan. The cabin itself is owned and worked on by the families grandfather. Complications with the family dynamic led to many split relationships, leading to the composition of this piece, highlighting that separation with the red pine situated directly in the middle of the piece. There are many familial elements stationed in the painting, including the very cabin walls and other construction as they were installed by members of the family.

Her Eyes Hoped For More (2024)

Her Eyes Hoped For More is a cut paper collage with printed, handwritten, and painted elements. It includes personal journal pages from Marchese's 2024 journal, as well as staged photographs, original poetry, and photographs of Marchese. However, the most striking element of the piece usually isn't recognized until generous contemplation, and that element is the painted footprints that were added by painting the feet of the artist, who then walked on top of the collage, creating an obvious right to left path. The right to left path directly points to looking towards the past, whereas walking left to right, similarly to the sequence in which English speakers read, would symbolize looking towards the future. This idea follows every other aspect of the piece, including the title, which is in the past tense.

Mania (2024)

Mania is a self portrait painted in gouache. It is intended to represent the anger and lack of control that many people feel when taking anti depressants, and other mood disorder medications that cause changes to their personalities.

Questions? (2024)

Questions? is a figure/ground graphic design that morphs the letter Q into a question mark by shifting black from the foreground to the background, and bringing the negative space into the foreground.

Kayak Study (2025)

Kayak study is the 8"x11" oil painting that precedes my larger oil study of the bank of a large sandhill on the Au Sable River. This study focused on the usage of light and how light on grass is perceived.
